Re: Fire service
Male? European? Shit show of getting into Police with those credentials. Your age is on your side though....
The NZ Fire Service has info regarding recruiting on it's website . They seem more structured and defined as far as the process of recruiting is concerned.
Police pay is poor, however as far as I have been told, Firemen pay is worse, but they work a 4 days on 4 days off cycle so hours per week is generally less. The physical tests are more based on endurance and heavy lifting, under trying conditions like lack of vision, heat and smoke (as you would expect given the nature of the job). My advice would be to train with heavy clothing, spend a lot of time running up and down stairs while carrying weights or wearing a heavy back pack, swim and spend time practising holding your breath underwater, and do weight training. The press up pass is low (15-17 is a pass compared to minimum of 34 for Police)but doing plenty of press ups as part of your training would build up upper body strength
Good luck in your career mate.

Re: Fire service
Hmmmm, TBH mate you'll be scratching to get in, although having said that, if you work hard at it and prove to the interviewers that you've got "the right stuff" you could well be in with a chance!
