Just reading an article on the Stuff website about kiwi coppers moving over the Aussie and all of a sudden finding that neither they nor their families are entitled to many of the benefits that they maybe thought they would be and are not eligible to apply for permanent residence or citizenship amongst other things.

He in the Nt we have recruited heavily from NZ Police ranks and I have met quite a few of them. Most are enjoying themselves so far and, particularly at this time of year, enjoying the gorgeous top end weather.

These guys too have discovered though that they are not entitled to some of the benefits that we take for granted including medicare.
I genuinely would not be surprised if some of them are not already regretting coming here and be heading home soon enough.
I wonder what would their chances of getting back into NZPol be ?

A member who has resigned can apply to re-join within four years of leaving and not have to go back to College.

And with Auckland's three Districts being over 100 staff short (many to Aussie), hopefully NZP wouldn't be ostrich-minded, and would welcome them back (subject to relevant checks)

Us kiwi's in the top end (and everywhere else) are entitled to Medicare, but you have to have been here for six months before applying (I've got a card, but haven't had to use it yet).

They should be able to apply for PR/Citizenship up here if they meet the points threshold etc (not easy to do without a degree though).

Likewise those I've met up here love it, as do their families. Only down side is Darwin is on the opposite side to NZ if one wants to head home!

    Hi Sam,

I stand to be corrected however the free access Kiwis had has greatly been restricted and while Kiwis get residency, citizenship is so hard now.
Apparently you need to be in that hard to employ category and apparently Policing isn't one of them.
I'm interested in that you can get the medicare card, I was under the impression that you couldn't.
I know that the Police association is working through the matter but there are any number of problems still to be faced.
That being said, most Kiwis seem to enjoy the place and love the climate, I guess we'll see if they're still of the same opinion after the build up in the Top end with a few powercuts to kill the aircon.
