I wouldn't think it is likely that you would be able to work alongside Police. Nearly every officer around the country wants to get there to help, but it's not possible. Police mainly working cordons or general patrols. Members of public will not be able to tag along due to health and safety and more specifically, you don't have any powers or training.

You should sign on to help the students or farmers in the suburbs. That's probably the best way to offer help. Or stay out of the city altogether and donate what you would have been spending on accommodation, food etc to the red cross.

Agreed. Not that we don't want the help, but more things are in hand at the moment...believe it or not.

I spoke to some of the US and Aussie USAR guys here today. One of them commented that this is the most organised disaster he's ever had the pleasure of working in...!

They are glad to be here, glad to be helping and have no time for the politics that goes on over and above our heads as far as who, where, when, what and for how long. They just want to get in there and help. The US LA Fire Dept rescue team I spoke to said the news broke in the states within minutes of it happening and they were on stand by to assist (subject to the politicking) within a couple of hours.

    What an amazing response...
