| That's more along the lines of what I was thinking. Get inside a police station and see how things work and make your mind up then about applying at 18. I'm not against 18 year olds joining, but in my opinion mature 18 year olds are hard to come by. I could never have done this at that age... Eveyone's different I guess. _________________ ALWAYS BLOW ON THE PIE! |

| Tuij
Go along to the seminar and talk to the recruiting sgt. Just let him know everything weather you think it is important or not. Minor matters wont effect you getting in.
As long as your honest then thats the best attribute you can have! |

Hi ZE. This probably warrants a new thread but would be keen to know how the thirty-somethings find police college? Do the older recruits find it difficult too (but for different reasons)? Thanks |

| I was a thorty-something at college...and so were the majority of those on my wing (average age 32). But we had a lot of younger fellas too (youngest was 18-19). I don't think it was a problem for anybody - you get out what you put in. _________________

| I thought our avg age was 28...but yeah there were a few old crusty's and a few bright and fresh. In the end we were all cops. Well, except for this one guy after we got fingerprinted... _________________ --== "I sometimes wish that people would put a little more emphasis upon the observance of the law than they do upon its enforcement." ==-- |

| You don't say... But that was my first introduction to being tarred with the same brush - our whole wing was referred to as rapists because of that clown...but to be fair, there was a lot of other shit done by other members at college too, so we all came out of there with a bad rep...Insp Cameron said he didn't care if we all failed...and a training Sgt described as a 'violent' wing...I have just one thing to say to them... %&6* #$64#@ (*)&*0_ ^&9()&)0 *&(8&^#$@) roughly translatad as - Hello. _________________

| 2 interesting points have been raised here in relation to recruiting, actually 3 when you think about it; Age, size and prior history.
In my opinion, and I stress that this is my opinion, 18 or 19 is waaaaaay to young to join the Police. Policing is a complex and challenging profession and I just don't think that an 18 or 19 yr old is mature enough for the job. I personally think that the best age is ball park 24- 32. Old enough to have a few life experiences but still young enough to cope with the rigours of the job. My advice to Tuij would be to go and get a trade, do the OE thing, travel theworld then come back in 5 or so years and then apply.. you'll be the better person and better copper for it.
As for size- I do a lot of training at the college over here being occasionally seconded as a firearms and dts instructor and am surprised at just how small some of the recruits are. I'm not the tallest bloke (1.8m) and sadly acknowledge that I'm not going to get any taller but I can change my bulk. I spend a fair bit of time in the gym and eat well. I tell the shorter recruits the same- bulk up- it helps on the job. I'd give the same advice to Tuij, you'll still get a bit taller but hit the gym, suck in the protein shakes and you'll be better for it.
As for prior history.. if you haven't been convicted then I can't see that there is an issue.
